When starting a new game, you can only create one custom avatar for the campaign. Characters are unlocked over time by collecting enough Cards when completing races, and it is possible to make upgrades to the characters to improve their attributes and weapons when enough Cards have been collected. Gameplay is very similar to that of Sonic Dash and Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, but instead of a simple endless runner, it is a common runner where the player competes with three other players online in real-time, akin to Sonic Rivals.
